In CHiSEL any information or data related to a particular object is organized in two different kinds of data layers: raster and vector. Raster layers allow to bind information to small parts of the 3D surface. This partition is determined by a set of cells whose size could be previously configured.
CHiSEL allows information layers to be directly visualized on the artefact surface. In this way, the spatial distribution of data provides experts with additional information to improve data analysis.
By combining two or more layers, information attributes are clearer exposed to the expert who may now discover new relationships among them.
Additionally, some parameters, including information colour mapping, alpha blending, data filtering, or SQL queries, could be configured to determine how each layer should be visualized.
CHiSEL is a prototype software in which non-graphical information is organized by means of a set of attribute layers that are defined on the object’s surface. This structure allows layer information to be managed in a similar way to GIS maps.
Rendering, querying information, and automatic layer computation are common operations that can be performed in CHiSEL.
In order to build communication and relationships around the use of computer science for cultural heritage, we would like to share our experience about 3D representation of archaeological text bearing object in Digital Humanities, i.e. Digital Epigraphy. This specific object requires deep theoretical work and specific technical answers. Several kinds of expertise and some space to work together are also necessary. The management and processing of information is a central issue in the Digital Humanities field that could be improved by building bridges with computer science. Our « carnet de recherche » is to build those bridges. Work on archaeological sites or cultural heritage artefacts usually generates a huge amount of heterogeneous information such as text documents, images data tables, video files, and so forth. Often, humanists are not aware of all these aspects and we think that a dedicated space to harvest and share these experience is useful for us and for the community. All this data must be efficiently collected, organized and accessed by the experts, specialists or any others interested in the information. For the moment, we work with Chisel. It is a prototype of a cultural heritage information system where all data related to an object is organized into a set of 3D information layers. In this way, the information can be directly rendered on the artefact surface in order to perform queries or analysis using the spatial distribution of the information itself. We want to testify of our experience and we want to improve this approach thanks to discussion with humanists.
